Achieve Perfect Plywood Joinery with the Freud 23/32 Inch Down-Shear Mortising Bit

Eliminate loose joints and sloppy dadoes when working with modern plywood using the Freud 16-103 23/32 Inch Mortising Bit. Because most "3/4-inch" plywood is actually manufactured to an undersized metric thickness (approx. 23/32"), using a standard 3/4" bit often results in gaps and weak glue joints. This bit is precision-ground to the exact 23/32" diameter, ensuring a tight, professional fit for shelving, cabinetry, and casework. The bit features a specialized "down-shear" geometry that actively pushes wood fibers down during the cut, producing razor-sharp, splinter-free edges on delicate veneers and laminates that would otherwise chip with standard straight bits.

Engineered for high-volume performance, the 16-103 is equipped with deep center gullets that facilitate rapid chip removal, preventing heat buildup even during deep mortising or long dado runs. The tool is shielded by Freud's industrial red Perma-SHIELD coating, which provides a non-stick surface that resists pitch, resin, and corrosion while reducing friction. With a 1/2-inch carbide height and a 1/4-inch shank, this bit is perfectly balanced for use in CNC machinery, hand-held routers, and table-mounted setups, making it the ultimate solution for joinery and hinge mortising in plywood and composites.

Key Features

  • Precision Plywood Fit: 23/32 inch diameter is sized perfectly for undersized 3/4" plywood dadoes.
  • Down-Shear Geometry: Shearing action pushes fibers down to guarantee splinter-free top surfaces.
  • Perma-SHIELD Coating: Non-stick coating reduces drag, prevents heating, and resists pitch buildup.
  • Deep Center Gullets: Maximizes chip evacuation to prevent clogging during heavy material removal.
  • Versatile Application: Ideal for mortising hinges, hardware, and cutting joinery grooves.
  • Universal Compatibility: Safe for use in CNC, hand-held, and table-mounted routers.
  • Clean Finishes: Delivers smooth, flat-bottom cuts in veneer, solid wood, and composites.

What's Included:

  • (1) 23/32 In. Mortising Bit with 1/4 In. Shank (Model 16-103)

Pro-Tip: Before cutting dadoes for your plywood shelving, measure the actual thickness of your sheet. Modern "3/4-inch" plywood is almost always undersized (closer to 23/32"). If you use a standard 3/4" bit, the joint will be loose and weak. Using this 23/32" bit ensures a snug, glueless fit that provides maximum structural integrity for your project.

Excellent for heavy chewers
Excellent toy for heavy chewers like malinois! The rope makes it easy to throw farther. Good amount of bounce as well. Definitely need to supervise as it could be a choking hazard for larger breeds.

Rope breaks toy breaks, buy it anyway?
3 stars. 4 stars during the 5 months it worked. 2 Star now. The rope bites through easily & often. I could hobble the rope together the first 5 months (see how it's shorter) now toy is a dud. Durability 1 Star. Took my 6 month old puppy a few minutes to do this. You see, she chewed threw it a few times and I was able to re-tie it until I ran out of rope. She DID love to do the puzzle- carrying it around, banging it on the ground repeatedly, tugging the rope gently up and down, holding the rope while shaking the ball like a pendulum side to side, rolling it with her paws like a cat, holding the rope with her teeth and banging the ball into various objects around the room trying to dislodge Stella and Chewy Meal Mixers... She's very clever and not at all a brut. I would give this to her for ten or fifteen minutes before bed. She still likes it and it still sort of works? She can no longer pull up and down on on the rope or carry it or around or bang it against various objects. So, you basically have a ball now with treats that can super easily fall out. You can just give your dog a regular ball with no hole and throw a handful of treats on the ground. I DO recommend buying this though. My dog loves it.

Greatest toy for GSD!
My German Shepherd LOVES LOVES LOVES this thing. I’ve purchased about 5 of them, not because they don’t last (they do), but so we can have them everywhere (one in each car, the backyard, the front yard, the house…). The string makes them so easy to throw far and you don’t have to handle a sloppy foamy tennis ball. And it’s great for playing a little tug. All in all, a winner of a product!

Good Toy Reward for Training
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
A great non-food reward for dog training and play! It’s the perfect size for my German Shepherd and the tie makes it easy to carry and play tug. It’s also been very durable for her sharp teeth!
