Red Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon choati)Overview
The Red Leopard Wrasse, also known as Choat’s Leopard Wrasse, is one of the most stunning and sought-after reef-safe wrasses. It features an intricate pattern of bright red and orange spots across a white body, with males displaying even more vivid coloration. Peaceful, elegant, and endlessly fascinating to watch, this species is a true showpiece for established reef aquariums.
OriginEndemic to Australia, particularly the Great Barrier Reef and Lord Howe Island, Macropharyngodon choati inhabits coral-rich areas and sandy slopes where it forages for small invertebrates.
FeedingAn omnivore that feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and copepods in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily. A well-established tank with live rock is essential for supplemental natural grazing.
Tank MatesPeaceful and reef-safe with most species, including tangs, anthias, gobies, and fairy wrasses. Avoid aggressive or highly territorial fish that may outcompete it for food.
AggressionA gentle and shy species that rarely shows aggression. Best introduced to a calm community aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces and a sand bed for sleeping and security.
Experience LevelRecommended for advanced aquarists. While hardy once settled, M. choati requires a mature, stable system with abundant microfauna and a soft substrate.
