This is the unusual life story of Army surgeon Robert W. Shufeldt. After his service as a teenaged Navy officer during the Civil War, Robert became an Army surgeon, much to the chagrin of his admiral father. His first permanent assignment was as post surgeon at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. RobertÕs June 1877 visit to the grisly scene of CusterÕs defeat lasted for weeks. Robert recovered the remains of a 7th Cavalry soldier. It was obvious this man had initially escaped the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors and nearly won his life and freedom. His body was shot full of arrows, but not mutilated like so many of Custer's men at the Little Big Horn. Robert's actions at the Little Big Horn, removing the remains of this soldier and collecting the arrows embedded in him, created a mystery that became a part of the legend and was not solved for 130 years! 314 pages.
