Polyethylene imine (PEI) is a positively charged hyperbranched polyamine selected as a capping agent that wraps around the surface of the gold nanoclusters. PEI Au NCs have been widely used due to their high luminescence properties and stability over a wide pH range. PEI Au NCs have good biocompatibility, easy surface modification or functionalization, making them more attractive in many biomedical applications.
