Later in the 1960s, effective medications were introduced that successfully brought about remission from serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia. All over the country, many severely mentally ill people were discharged from mental hospitals resulting in a very large group of the homeless mentally ill who had no where to go but the streets.
The 1960s were a decade of rapid change for the U.S. including the Civil Rights Movement that challenged Jim Crow Segregation while America committed itself to the Vietnam War.
